Learn how to apply mesh tape for BASWA to drywall transitions, trimless light fixtures, trimless diffusers, and access panels to achieve a seamless finish.
Mesh tape is one of the most versatile and important detail materials in a BASWA acoustical plaster installation. Wherever the system meets a dissimilar surface or a trimless condition, mesh tape is what bridges the gap, prevents cracking at transitions, and allows the Pre-Fill and finish coats to flow continuously across the joint. Applying it incorrectly is a leading cause of visible cracking, edge delamination, and finish inconsistencies at these critical termination points.
This guide covers the four most common mesh tape applications in a BASWA Phon installation: drywall transitions, trimless light fixtures, trimless diffusers, and access panels.
Across all four applications below, Trim-Tex 847 Spray Adhesive is the approved bonding agent. In every case, the technique is the same: apply two medium coats to both surfaces being joined, allow both to dry until tacky, then bring them together. Tacky means the adhesive is no longer wet but still has grip. Pressing surfaces together while the adhesive is still wet or after it has dried past tacky will result in a weaker bond. One can of Trim-Tex 847 covers 6 to 8 trim or tape applications.
Do not substitute other adhesives. Trim-Tex 847 is the only spray adhesive approved for use by BASWA acoustic.
When a BASWA system terminates against a drywall surface, mesh tape creates the flexible, Pre-Fill-ready bridge that keeps the transition from cracking as the two dissimilar materials respond differently to building movement and humidity.

Step 1: Using the BASWA Sander, sand the edges of the BASWA Supporting Panels that will adjoin the drywall to a depth of 1 inch wide by 1/8 inch deep. This recessed channel is what allows the mesh tape and Pre-Fill to sit flush with the surrounding panel surface.
Step 2: Apply two medium coats of Trim-Tex 847 Spray Adhesive to the sanded panel surface and to the adjacent drywall surface. Allow both to dry until tacky.
Step 3: Apply the mesh tape across the joint and smooth firmly into place, ensuring full contact on both the panel and drywall sides.
Step 4: Once the adhesive is dry, apply BASWA Pre-Fill over the mesh tape, gauging the fill depth to match the thickness of the adjoining panel. Finish as usual with Base and Fine coats.
Trimless light fixtures require mesh tape to integrate the fixture flange into the BASWA panel surface without a visible trim profile. This is a multi-step process that demands care at each adhesive application.

Step 1: Cut the penetration in the BASWA Supporting Panel to accept the light housing, then install the panel to the substrate.
Step 2: Apply two medium coats of Trim-Tex 847 to both the panel surface around the penetration and the back of the trimless flange. Once tacky, press the flange into position and secure with screws. Do not over-tighten the screws, as this can distort the flange and create an uneven surface for taping.
Step 3: Apply two medium coats of Trim-Tex 847 over the flange edges and onto the surrounding BASWA Phon panel. Once tacky, apply mesh tape to all sides of the flange and smooth firmly into place.
Step 4: Once dry, apply BASWA Pre-Fill over the mesh tape on all sides, gauging to the panel thickness. Finish as usual.
Trimless diffusers require an additional preparation step before any adhesive is applied, because the diffuser surface must be primed before it can accept the BASWA finish system.

Step 1: Apply a fine coat of white spray paint primer to the diffuser. Mask off all adjacent surfaces before priming to prevent overspray from contaminating the BASWA panel surface.
Step 2: Apply two medium coats of Trim-Tex 847 to the diffuser edge, the BASWA Phon Supporting Panel surface, and the back of the BAS-9000 Trim. Once tacky, apply the BAS-9000 Trim into position.
Step 3: When the trim is dry and set, apply two medium coats of Trim-Tex 847 to the face of the BAS-9000 Trim and the adjacent panel surface. Allow to dry until tacky.
Step 4: Apply mesh tape across the trim-to-panel joint on all sides and smooth firmly into place.
Step 5: When dry, apply BASWA Pre-Fill over the mesh tape, gauging to panel thickness. Finish as usual.
Access panels within a BASWA system require a specific layered approach to ensure the panel can function while the surrounding acoustical finish remains continuous and seamless. The correct sequence for an access panel condition is as follows:

Priming the access panel face with white paint before the finish system is applied is essential in this condition, just as it is for trimless diffusers. An unprimed metal or painted access panel face will not accept the BASWA finish system with adequate adhesion.
