BASWA acoustical plaster ceilings are engineered to maintain their acoustic performance and visual appearance for the long term. To support that longevity, BASWA has developed a comprehensive maintenance program covering everything from routine surface care to stain removal and repair. This page covers the first and most frequently needed step in that program: removing surface particles like dirt, dust, and fingerprints.

Why Proper Technique Matters

The porous texture of BASWA acoustical plaster finishes is what gives them their exceptional sound absorption properties, and that same texture requires some care during cleaning. Using the wrong tools or too much pressure can push surface particles deeper into the finish or cause unnecessary wear. The good news is that routine cleaning requires nothing more than a few common items, used the right way.

What the Video Covers

The video below demonstrates the complete process for removing surface particles from a BASWA finish. Specifically, it walks through:

  • How to vacuum the surface safely using a clean, soft brush attachment
  • How to use pressurized air to blow off loose debris horizontally without disturbing the finish
  • How to lift residual dirt using masking tape without abrading the surface
  • How to gently rub away stubborn surface marks using a white eraser
  • Why wearing white gloves throughout the process helps prevent transferring additional oils or dirt to the surface

Tools You Will Need

All of the tools used in this process are common and readily available. You will need a vacuum with a clean soft brush attachment, a can of pressurized air, standard masking tape, and a clean white eraser. No specialized chemicals or equipment are required for this level of routine maintenance.

When Surface Cleaning Is Not Enough

If dirt and dust removal does not fully resolve the appearance of your BASWA ceiling, the remaining discoloration is likely a deeper stain that requires a different approach. In those cases, BASWA Clean is recommended. BASWA Clean is a two-part oxidizing solution designed to penetrate the surface, lift stains and odors, and restore the original white appearance of your installation without scrubbing or harsh chemicals.
