Acoustical Plaster in Florida | Certified Installers

Seamless acoustical plaster for Florida schools, theaters, museums, and hotels, installed by BASWA certified installers from Miami to Tampa.

Seamless acoustical plaster on a 40-foot theater dome in Miami Beach, Florida

Acoustical plaster is a seamless, sound-absorbing ceiling and wall finish that looks like smooth plaster. It gives architects and designers a continuous surface with no tiles, grids, or visible panels while it controls echo and reverberation in the room. In Florida, it’s specified for schools, performing arts centers, museums, hotels, and historic buildings.

A BASWA system starts with sound-absorbing panels adhered to a stable substrate such as drywall, concrete, or existing plaster. Certified installers fill the seams and hand-trowel a porous marble-aggregate finish over the top. Sound passes through the finish’s fine pores into the panel, where its energy turns into heat instead of reflecting back into the room.

BASWA acoustic North America supplies BASWA systems throughout Florida and connects every project with a certified installer. BASWA Phon carries a Class A fire rating under ASTM E84, and its sound absorption gives school designers a practical way to meet Florida’s classroom acoustics requirement.

Where Acoustical Plaster Fits in Florida

Florida’s newer buildings lean on glass, concrete, and tall open volumes, and its older ones on hard plaster. Both make rooms loud. Acoustical plaster brings the noise down while the ceiling keeps the look of smooth plaster.

Colegios, institutos y universidades

Florida now requires enhanced classroom acoustics in school classrooms, which puts reverberation time on the checklist for every new classroom and addition. Lecture halls, learning commons, and libraries benefit too, since speech carries more clearly when sound doesn’t linger. BASWA Phon follows curved and vaulted ceilings, so campus buildings keep their architecture.

Artes Escénicas

Concert halls and theaters need reverberation matched to the program. At the New World Center in Miami Beach, BASWA finishes were spray-applied to the curved sails above the stage, tuned to absorb specific high frequencies. The sails also serve as a surface for projected images. At the Faena Forum, also in Miami Beach, 40 mm and 70 mm BASWA Phon covers the 40-foot dome of the theater. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale is another Florida installation.

Museos y espacios culturales

Galleries need quiet without visual clutter, so the work on the walls carries the room. A seamless acoustical plaster ceiling reads as a plain plaster surface, with no grid or panel seams to compete with the exhibit. The Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg uses BASWA acoustical plaster.

Sanitario

Patient rooms, waiting areas, and lobbies are calmer when sound doesn’t linger. BASWA Phon pairs acoustic performance with a Class A fire rating under ASTM E84 and a 10 out of 10 mold resistance score under ASTM D3273.

Hospitality, Resorts, and Restaurants

Hotel lobbies, restaurants, and resort clubhouses are built with hard surfaces that make conversation work harder. Acoustical plaster on the ceiling quiets the room without changing the design. Pier Sixty-Six, the resort and marina in Fort Lauderdale, is among the most recent Florida projects. For walls people will touch or bump, BASWA Basic is impact resistant.

Restauración de edificios históricos

Miami Beach’s Art Deco and Mediterranean Revival buildings are worth keeping as they are. BASWA Phon can be applied over existing plaster, and it works around molding and crown profiles. On older buildings, BASWA mechanical fixing inserts add a screwed connection between the acoustic panels and the existing surface, which holds the system in place if the aging plaster behind it starts to break down. Finding a Certified Acoustical Plaster Installer in Florida

Every BASWA system in Florida is installed by a certified installer: a plastering or drywall contractor trained by BASWA to apply the system to its standard. Certification keeps a hand-troweled finish consistent from one project to the next, and it gives general contractors a subcontractor who has done this work before.

BASWA certified installers work across South Florida, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. Others cover Central Florida around Orlando and the Tampa Bay area, including Tampa and St. Petersburg. For projects in Southwest Florida, including Naples and Fort Myers, tell us the location and we’ll match you with an installer who can take the work.

Florida Codes and Sustainability

Florida schools have a specific acoustic requirement. The Florida Building Code requires enhanced classroom acoustics in school classrooms of 20,000 cubic feet or less, which means meeting the reverberation time limits in Section 808 of ICC A117.1. The limit is 0.6 seconds for rooms up to 10,000 cubic feet and 0.7 seconds for rooms up to 20,000. The Florida Building Code, Existing Building, applies the same rule to classrooms in additions to existing schools. BASWA Phon reaches an NRC of up to 1.00, so the ceiling can do much of that work.

Ceiling and wall finishes in Florida are classified by flame spread under ASTM E84. BASWA Phon is Class A.

Humidity is a common question for finishes in Florida. BASWA Phon scored 10 out of 10 for mold resistance under ASTM D3273. For humid spaces that aren’t air conditioned, such as covered outdoor areas, talk with our technical team before specifying.

BASWA Phon panels contain at least 80% recycled glass, and the finish is 95% recycled marble aggregate. The system is Living Building Challenge Red List free, with Health Product Declarations and Environmental Product Declarations available.

Preguntas Frecuentes

Who installs acoustical plaster in Florida?

BASWA systems are installed by BASWA certified installers, who are plastering and drywall contractors trained on the system. Installers work in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Orlando, Tampa, and St. Petersburg. Contact us with your project location, including Naples and Fort Myers, and we’ll connect you with a certified installer.

How do I become a certified acoustical plaster installer in Florida?

Plastering and drywall contractors can train with BASWA to become certified installers. See how to become a BASWA certified installer.

Can acoustical plaster help a Florida classroom meet the code’s reverberation limits?

Yes. Florida requires classrooms of 20,000 cubic feet or less to meet the reverberation time limits in Section 808 of ICC A117.1, and a high-absorption ceiling is one of the most direct ways to get there. BASWA Phon reaches an NRC of up to 1.00. Compliance depends on the whole room, so the ceiling should be modeled with the other finishes.

Does acoustical plaster hold up in Florida’s humidity?

BASWA Phon scored 10 out of 10 for mold resistance under ASTM D3273. It’s suited to air-conditioned interiors. Humid spaces without air conditioning should be reviewed with our technical team first.

¿Se puede aplicar el yeso acústico en techos curvos o abovedados?

Yes. BASWA Phon follows curves, domes, and groin vaults, with a minimum radius of 2 feet for standard curved application. Tighter conditions are reviewed with our technical team before install. The 40-foot theater dome at the Faena Forum in Miami Beach is one example.
